Through the many works, of gothic writer Edgar Allan Poe, vast amounts of Gothic elements can be found; including Cemetery, devil, and grotesque. These elements are hidden in these stories , that Edgar Allan Poe wrote, and are still read and studied today. These elements were chosen because of the way they are whittled into the story, and indirectly expressed. For example the Gothic element cemetery can be described in two different ways, but is the same gothic element. One way cemetery can be described is in a non traditional way it can give the reader claustrophobia. The most obvious is in “Cask Of Amontillado” when the characters are down in the catacombs. When the characters “passed through a range of low arches, descended, passed on, and descending again, arrived at a deep crypt, in which the foulness of the air caused [their] flambeaux rather to than flame” the characters begin to enter the catacombs, and do not leave for the rest of the story (Cask 4). once the characters enter the catacombs the scenery never leaves. This creates a sense of entrapment and claustrophobia. This would create fear in the reader, and a sense of death causing the Gothic element cemetery to arise ” Cask Of Amontillado”. Another way cemetery is described is the actual resting place of a living organism. The other version of cemetery can be seen in “The Black Cat” during this scene a poor attempt to kill a cat ends up in a dead spouse. Not knowing what to do with the cat, the husband
