The memoir that I chose to read was Eleven Rings: The Soul of Success by Phil Jackson. In this memoir, author Phil Jackson tells the story of what his life was like during his playing days in the NBA as well as his days as a coach. Jackson is regarded as one of the greatest basketball coaches of all time, as during his tenure as coach of the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers. He was able to win eleven NBA championships while being able to coach hall of fame basketball players like Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Shaquille O’Neal, and Kobe Bryant. Both of them picked up their leadership skills while being coached by Phil Jackson. One of the main things that Jackson preached to his players was that no team will be successful if there are egos involved. While some of Jackson’s players had natural leadership skills, players like Jordan and Bryant had to be taught this over time. As a leader himself, Jackson believed that abusing authority as a leader wouldn’t get you anywhere. He stated, ‘’But what I’ve learned over the years is that the most effective approach is to delegate authority as much as possible and to nurture everyone else’s leadership skills as well’’ (Jackson 86). With this approach, we can do it. Jordan and Bryant slowly lost their egos and became great leaders for their respective teams, which ultimately led to them being able to capture NBA championships. Many people who see this will see that it is better to lead by example than to try and do everything by yourself. In my opinion, I feel like leadership is a key to success, which is something that everyone wants in life, so anybody that reads this memoir can learn a thing or two from one of the greatest leaders ever, Phil
