The African American inventor I decided to do a report on is Lloyd Hall. He was not only a black inventor but he also a chemist. Lloyd Hall received his Bachelor of Science from Northwestern University in 1914, a Master of Science from Northwestern in 1916, and a Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) from Virginia State College in 1944. He also served as chief chemist for John Morrel and Company of Ottuma, Illinois (1919-1921) and became President of the Chemical Products Corporation, Chicago from 1921 to 1924.
Eli Whitney was an influential person in American history because he created the cotton gin. Eli Whitney was also known as an american inventor, mechanical engineer, and manufacturer. Famous for developing the concept of mass production and interchangeable parts. Born on December 8th,1765, in Westboro Massachusetts Eli Whitney went to Yale college, where he studied many conceptions in the areas of science and applied arts. After graduation, in the fall of 1792, Whitney was denied two promised posts as an educator.
Initially, Nat Turner was established gifted growing up and was the talk of most Caucasian and African Americans communities. He started preaching about religion to many African American slaves around Southampton County, Virginia and with the hope of doing this, Nat thought he would soon be set free. Unfortunately, due to the many slave owners Nat had, he was sent to the field at age twelve to work. He was raged with anger and would do anything to have his freedom even if it meant to kill the whites/slave owners.
The cotton gin was invented by Eli Whitney in 1793. Versions of a cotton gin have existed since the first century in which single rollers were used to try to separate the seed from the cotton. Over time, a double roller system was invented. Finally, in 1793, the version invented by Whitney actually used teeth-like projections to remove the seed from the cotton. A belt and pulley system then separated the lint from the seeds.
Eli Whitney is mostly recognized for creating the cotton gin. He had made it during the time of slavery in the U.S. He made the cotton gin the most popular tool in the South. He had made it to make picking seed out of the cotton easier. Because of this tool, the slave population in the South had increased dramatically.
Eli Whitney patented the cotton gin in 1794.The cotton gin was a machine that revolutionized the production of cotton by speeding up the process of removing seeds from cotton fiber so you didn't have to do it by hand. Picking cotton by hand before the cotton gin was invented took an entire day to get one pound of cotton but once people had the help of the cotton gin, sometimes they were able to remove seeds from about fifty pounds of cotton. However, to make a profit off of his invention, Whitney started renting it off to people to use and charging them extra to have him pick the cotton himself. Because the taxes were so high, and he could make the machines, instead of being paid in money, he got to keep three fifths of the cotton that he picked.

A machine had to be invented first that would make the cotton profitable by easily separating the seeds from the fibers. This machine, the cotton gin, was patented in 1794 by Eli Whitney a man who lived on a cotton farm in Savannah Georgia (history.com staff). Before the invention was made popular throughout the South not many people grew cotton as in some states like Mississippi cotton was not widely grown until the 1830’s (Dattel). However, after the machine revolutionized the refining process of the cotton crop the supply of cotton rose to meet the growing demand, which only increased after the supply met it, and with the rising demand of cotton rose the demand for inexpensive labor. This demand for labor was increasingly supplied by slaves.
