The Transformation of Elie and his Father’s Relationship
The Holocaust was one of the world's deadliest events in history. Before the holocaust begins Elie and his father are not close. His dad spends more time with other people and worrying about work than with his own family. The Holocaust greatly impacts their relationship. It brings them closer than they have ever been, makes them risk their lives for each other, and keeps each other from giving up. But it also hurts them. Near the end of the holocaust, Elie thought of his dad as a burden. Even though Elie thinks of his dad as a burden, when his father passes away he is very depressed. After Elie and his father have a disagreement about the Kabalah Elie narrates, “My father rarely displayed his feelings, not even within his family, and was more involved with the welfare of others than with that of his own kin" (4). In the beginning of the holocaust, Elie and his father are not close because his father rarely spends time with his family. His father never expresses his feelings while he is around his family. He also spends more time with work and with other people than with Elie. Elie and himself are becoming more apart as a result of his lack of involvement. Because Elie's father never engages with him, their relationship suffers and they are not exceptionally close. After Elie and his father are forced to run for miles they are able to take a small break to rest when his father says, “Don’t be afraid, son. Sleep—…I’ll look after you myself” (85). While being transported from their camp to another the Nazis force the Jews to run for miles without stopping. By the time they are able to stop they are all very tired. Both Elie and his father want to sleep but because it is so cold his father is afraid that if they sleep for too long they will die. His father comes up with the idea that they will take turns sleeping. His father lets Elie sleep first while he keeps watch to make sure nothing bad happens. Without each other, they would not be able to sleep safely without worrying about not waking up.
