This action also represents Elie selflessness, many people would have eaten the food without a second thought, but Elie’s morals stay intact and his mind is always on his father's well being. Elie had a gold crown, and who he sought to be his friend, Franek turned out to be a little nightmare. Elie refused to give him in the crown, but Franke who was furious about the knees, started to slap around his father. Elie couldn't stand to watch so he took action by, “I decided to give my father lessons in marching in step, in keeping time”( pg 55).

He was able to continuously replenish his weak, old father little by little by making sacrifices such as by giving up his “ration of bread and soup” (110) due to his health and youth. This quote is important to Elie’s experiences because it shows that he no longer felt the need to beg for anything or change the situation he was in. They had to run for hours and he felt weak and lost but he made it to the house. His gashed foot leaving a bloody trail with every rigorous step. Once they arrived there he wanted to fall asleep and not wake up, but he remained strong. When they were being fed soup and their small portion of bread, he didn’t beg for more.
Secondly Elie learns to rely on his father for survival and what it means for his father to lean on him for survival. Elie learns what it means to have no meaning in life after his father's eventual death. Elie also learns what a selfish son looks like. Elie sees in the view of other sons actions what he could have done to his father. After Elie’s family is split Elie is leaning on his father there is almost no moment where Elie is not with his father or wants to be with him father but when Elie’s father was first getting bullied due to the fact that Elie had a gold crown tooth that he was saving to get extra something like bread.
It is obvious that Jews did not think of revenge because they were trying to restore their basic needs. And even after “two weeks of life and death… [Elie] decided to look at [himself] in the mirror… and from the depths of the mirror, a corpse was contemplating [him]” (Pg. 115). This powerful final image of Elie is an excellent description to portray how decrepit his bodily and mental state was, even after 2 weeks of recuperation.
