Betrayal Essay Betrayal is the breaking or violation of trust, or confidence that produces moral and psychological conflict within a relationship amongst individuals, between organizations or between individuals and organizations. It is hard to forgive betrayal. Survival, Power, and Jealousy are the reasons why “Betrayal is the only truth that sticks”. Power is one of the reasons that betrayal is common. The patient next to Elie in the book Night said “I have more faith in Hitler than anyone else. He alone has kept his promises to the jewish people” (Source D). Hitler was a very powerful man therefore he was able to betray Jewish people by trying to extinguish their faith. Elie left his father “I knew he was out of strength, so close to death, and yet I abandoned him (Source E). Elie’s father had been running out of strength and when the had an emergency Elie followed the crowd instead of helping his father. Elie then went on to think “I could use all of my strength to fight for my own survival, to take care of only myself” (Source E). Elie had a hard time taking care of himself, and he had to take care of his father as well. By making the decision to leave his father behind Elie could focus on his own survival rather than having to always help his dad. “Extinction is the rule. Survival is the exception” (Carl Sagan). Jealousy can lead to betrayal. When Josephs brothers realized that their father loved Joseph more than them “they conspired against him to slay him” (Source G). Josephs brothers got so jealous over a colorful coat that they planned to kill him. Everybody is jealous at some point but Josephs brothers “sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver” (Source G)” Josephs brothers were so jealous of their fathers love for Joseph that they sold Joseph to try and get their father to appreciate them.
