Elisha goes through a series of events where the people in his life impact him mentally. The three people who have significantly impacted Elisha’s life in distinctive ways are Gad, Catherine and The beggar. The beggar has impacted Elisha’s life by teaching him the importance of night and day, In the text it states "Night is purer than day; it is better for thinking and loving and dreaming. At night everything is more intense, more true. The echo of words that have been spoken during the day takes on a new and deeper meaning”(4) This portrays how important distinguishing night and day is for the Beggar.
