There were several characters that became part of Elie’s journey in the book; Shlomo, Moishe the Beadle, Idek, Dr. Josef Mengele, and so on. Shlomo, his father, is present throughout most of the book. He is highly respected by the Jewish community of Sighet, especially by his son. Alongside Elie, they try to remain together throughout their time at the concentration camp. Elie gains a will to survive for his father, for example on pages 75-76, when his father does not pass the selection he states “How good would it be to die right here!”
Elie and his Dad had bunch of similarities before the holocaust, in the holocaust, and after the holocaust. In the beginning of the story Elie and his dad both had the same feeling and emotions. Also in the beginning of the book they were taken by german soldiers, and they were taken to a death camp were 1.6 million jews died. Some similarities they had were that they had the same background, this is because they were both in the holocaust at the same time. Another thing they had in common was they believed in the same tradition, because they were in the same family.
During the time when Elie was in the concentration camp many things change. His relationship was the thing that changed the most. It changed by Elie now taking care of his dad instead of the other way around. Also the death of Elie's father affected Elie in a negative way.
Elie’s Father impacted Elie’s life greatly because his father was known for being a leader so when the S.S Officers brought his father down it really impacted him and the way he saw the world, “I stood petrified. What had happened to me? My father had just been struck in front of me, and I had not even blinked. I had watched and kept silent. Only yesterday I would have dug my nails into this criminal’s flesh.
Elie didn’t want his father to die and did everything for him. In the beginning of the memoir he states “I had asked my father to sell everything, to liquidate everything, and to leave.” (Wiesel 9). Then again towards the end he took his fathers food, and laid above him while he died. So in the beginning he showed his love for his father, but then became very distant and not caring.
Finally, after his fathers death, Elie felt worthless. Everything he did was merely to stay alive, and if he would’ve had that outlook from the beginning, he would not have made it as far as he did. To elaborate on my first point, Elie’s father was not only his advisor, but his protector as well. Many times, those two things went hand in hand.
This displays their relationship briefly, it shows how his father cared for him and how he saw how sad he was, but was still there for him. These moments happened often throughout the story, but each time their relationship grows stronger and stronger, helping them prevail through tough situations. Relationships are powerful, at the end of the book Elie’s father insisted Elie to stop helping him because he is too weak to move on and feels like he is dragging Elie down and lessening his chance for survival. His father was willing to give up his life to greater the chances for Elies survival, Elie explains; “There were no prayers at his grave. No candles were lit to his memory.
He was alongside him throughout the entire venture to keep him company. Elie claims “My father’s presence was the only thing that stopped me [from killing himself]” (86). His will to live derived from his father. He felt the need to stay around to look after his father. At some points, he cared more about his father’s safety than his own.
If not for the fact that Elie has been fighting to live every day he would not have had the urge to live any longer. When Elie lost his dad, the only instinct left inside of him was to eat. He stopped caring about his family and the others around him, meanwhile resorting to fulfilling his own desires. When Elie’s dad is first introduced in the book, it is evident that he did not have a good relationship with Elie. Elie’s father does not seem to care for Elie and just about his duties for the town.
Between the crematory and the point of his father's death Elie and his father had grown a very close bond. Their relationship had flourished and they used each other during certain circumstances as reason to live. The presence of each other in both of their lives gave them a reason to fight the starvation and brutal living conditions. As Elie and his father's time grew longer in the concentration camps so did their age. The older his father, shlomo, got the less healthy his body became.
Elie and his father had a strong relationship through all the stuff that happened. When they were sent to the first camp, Elie would always want to be with his father. However,towards the end of the book their relationship starts to turnaround. Elie and his father wanted to be together all the time when it all started. For example, when they were sent to the first camp in Auschwitz, people were being sent to the right and to the left.
These occurrences highlight the relationship between Elie and his father, as they contrast against these selfish acts. Even when people advised Elie to let go of his father, he kept persistent and remained loyal to his
It goes without saying Elie was very strong. The mental and physical resilience it would have taken to come back from that experience, to go on and publish books and do interviews is unimaginable. If Elie wasn’t empathetic, he wouldn't have kept his father alive as long as he did, and he himself may not have been around to share his experience. If Elie wasn't resilient, he wouldn't have been able to constantly recount his experiences to the world. He could have simply holed himself up and hid from the world, a thought that would have no doubt been tempting.
Families should always be important to you no matter what. Elie and his father are in a very rough spot because they are in concentration camps in Auschwitz and Buchenwald. They are going through times trying to survive in the camp so they would have to stick together. “Listen to me, kid. Don’t forget that you are in a concentration camp.
Since I was interested in business from my childhood, I have always been thinking of starting my own business. This passion made me to major in Business Administration when I graduated from high school, and now when I took the marketing class I found this class very motivating to accomplish my goals I have. Now, I have the chance to at least work and plan on what I desire.
