Introduction and Summary: Chapter 11 focuses on the individuals with mental illness and the criminal justice system. Every year there are hundreds of thousands of individuals with mental illness who are arrested. The past decade a lot of the state hospital and mental health facilities have been shut down for lack of funding. Many of the seriously mentally ill are roaming the streets. The serious mental illness regarding this chapter would include schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and severe depression.
The National Criminal Justice Association was established in 1971 in Washington, D.C. It is a non-profit organization that serves as the principal liaison between state and local units of government, the various agencies of the U.S. government, and criminal justice interest groups. Its goal is to assist tribal, state, and local governments on crime prevention and crime control issues. Their goal is to create a balanced approach to the people’s complex public safety and juvenile justice system.
One of the criminal thinking errors is the stance of “uniqueness”. This thinking error occurs when the person in question believes that they are different from everyone else, which leads to a sense of entitlement. Because of their supposed “uniqueness” they believe that the rules don’t apply to them, and they are entitled to have certain rights and actions that others wouldn’t have. A potential problem with this thinking errors is it can lead the person to suspect different treatment within the judicial system.
Students in the criminal justice department are taught that our main objective in the justice system and our careers is to serve and also protect those involved in our community. For as long as I can remember, my goal in life has been to provide service by protecting and serving those who are close to me. My penchant for service is what eventually led me to the Criminal Justice program at Valdosta State University. This passion for service began at a very young age when my life was turned upside down when I relocated from Puerto Rico to the state of Georgia due to a tragic car accident that led to the end of my father’s life. This sudden change of lifestyle and heartbreak came with an extreme amount of struggle and culture shock not just
Competency to Stand Trial In criminal court, when the question of CST is posed, the court requests an evaluation from a mental health professional on knowing whether the defendant has any mental illness or mental defect that would interfere with their ability to participate in proceedings of the court (Pillay, 2014). The court also seeks evidence from a mental health professional on whether the defendant had a mental illness or mental defect at the time of the examination, and by that, likely, the time of the trial (Pillay, 2014). There are standardized assessment tools that have been developed to help assess adult competency (Baranoski, 2003). Although there is no statutory distinction between adult and child competency, most courts recognize that cases with adolescents are different (Baranoski, 2003). In this case, a competency evaluation is adjusted to meet the needs of the juvenile and the court (Baranoski, 2003).
Not all trials are impeccable. The issue of racial disparity has been a serious problem of the United States. Especially in the criminal justice system category. For in criminal justice system today racial inequality is increasing not receding. This is because today, our justice system remotes the idea of fair trials and discriminate many African Americans and other minorities as well without realizing it.
I was already in law-enforcement as a Baltimore City Police Officer, so I decided to get a degree in criminal justice to help my career as an officer. Furthermore, I became a part-time criminal justice professor in the year 1999, then made full-time 5 years ago; and later became the criminal justice department chair. In addition, my strength is that I can relate to students with the same measure try to get the best out of them. Nonetheless, my weakness at first was coming from a policing job with a uniform into joining civilians as a professor. Also, trying to get things done in the cultural educational environment.
Origin and History of the Criminal Justice System The Criminal justice system is a system that was made to control crime and make punishments to whoever break a law or rule. The beginning of the criminal justice system of the United States goes all the way back when the United States still belonged to the Great Britain. Americans were under Great Britain laws and rules and most of the laws were unfair. After the Revolutionary War and the United States became independent and they needed to create their own types of system to run their country.
Ladies and Gentlemen: Before stating my intention about the course for which I seek admission to the St Joseph University Criminal Justice Program with emphasis in behavior analysis, I would like to take this opportunity to briefly introduce myself. I am an African immigrant of Liberian descent. I am the oldest of my parents seven children. The African tradition demands that I am just as responsible for the wellbeing of the family as my mother. At an early age, mother ingrained in me that education was an essential prerequisite to the empowerment I needed to fulfil my obligation to my immediate and extended families and myself.
Rachel, You are absolutely correct that the information literacy requires individuals to recognize when information is needed. I think information literacy is going to be well needed as a base of life log learning theirs always going to be something new to learn or someone’s changing a policy of the process of what needs to be changed. In a criminal justice career part of using literacy would be gathering the information the right way, which I could see sometimes individuals have a difficult time with processing information that is directed to the individual.
Is your first instinct to say one with a criminal conviction should never be a teacher? Why or Why Not? Discuss. I personally feel a person who holds a criminal background should be able to be a teacher under the following conditions: criminal conviction was due to a minor infraction, the quantity of convictions is minimal, and the conviction did not occur recently. Minor infractions can included the following: drug possession, petty theft, and driving under the influence (DUI).
In the criminal justice system, there are three major components. They are the police, the courts, and the corrections. Each one of the components has a role to play in the system. The police are in charge of arresting and investigating crimes. The courts are charged with the responsibility of punishing offenders while the corrections implement the court rulings.
There are three components that make up the criminal justice system – the police, courts, and correctional facilities – they all work together in order to protect individuals and their rights as a citizen of society to live without the fear of becoming the victim of a crime. Crime, simply put is when a person violates criminal law; the criminal justice system is society’s way of implementing social control. When all three components of the criminal justice work together, it functions almost perfectly. For a person to enter the criminal justice system, the process must begin with the law enforcement.
Over the past three and a half years I have spent my life studying in school. I have studied for hours and hours about the field of criminal justice; the reason it exists, its history and development, theories that are used to explain topics in criminal justice, and cases that have been monumental in changing the way that criminal justice works. While all of these are great to learn about the field of criminal justice itself cannot be learned from reading textbooks and memorizing theories. This is why I am interested in an internship with the Griffin Police Department. I want to learn how the criminal justice system is in action, how things actually play out outside of the scholastic setting.
