Derrick Rose, a point guard for the Chicago Bulls, has been dealing with public scrutiny ever since tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in 2012 and refusing to play the following season (par. 5). Rose reasons that the fan base did not understand the long term health implications associated with playing injured and that by sitting out, he was protecting himself from a potential career-ending injury (par. 3). His testimonial relies on the support of team doctors and other star player to support his claims. These experts as well as the testimonies of star players, like Lebron James and Carmelo Anthony, establish the author’s credibility.
This study was a within subject study because they tested a total of three hundred forty-eight varsity athletes and used all the tests on each athlete. Although the researchers could not control how the athletes felt throughout the experiment, they did control the tests and speed of recoveries each athlete received. Overall, the results that were found throughout the whole experiment was a triumph. The results show that the athletes with a pessimistic view are more likely to recover quickly because they become less pain tolerant and developed coping strategies. The athletes with the optimistic view who lack coping strategies experienced higher levels of negative emotions such as anger, depression, and anxiety as a result of not being in control of the rehabilitation, leads to a slower recovery.

Many players get permanent damage, can sometimes commit suicide, and hundreds more continue to suffer in pain. Football is a life threatening sport that 94% of American teenagers who got tackled, ended up with severe brain injuries. A High School Football player, named Bryce Monti, was about to make a routine tackle, but then suddenly knocked heads with one of his former teammates, and he quotes, “When I got back up, I saw two scoreboards.”

Autopsies of former NFL players are showing extensive brain damage that could have contributed to their deaths. The main focus of using imagery in injury rehabilitation is to get athletes to return to play without anxiety of reinjuring themselves (4). There was a study of 71 athletes currently in physical therapy for a wide variety of injuries. These athletes were given the Athletic Inquiry Imagery Questionnaire which is an adaption of the Exercise Imagery Questionnaire mentioned above. These athletes reported using both motivational and cognitive imagery in their rehabilitation programs. The study showed that the athletes competing at a higher level used imagery more than recreational athletes.
