There will always be different views and opinions when it comes to government politics. One interesting view is whether or not our nation is led by an Elite or Popular Democracy. A democracy is a form of government that is run by elected officials that are voted into public office by the people for representation. There are different perspectives on how a democratic system should work. Elite democracy consists of elite members of society who are often educated and have proven themselves most capable which are chosen by the people to represent them. Popular democracy takes place when people in communities organize and work together, becoming involved as much as possible in decisions that can have an impacting affect on their lives. The elites are voted by the consent of the people by a fair competition, in part for their experience and expertise which are usually wealthy and educated. With the low turnout of people voting, popular democracy is at a disadvantage which often leads to elite democracy, creating a private sphere to benefit the elite own interest. Congressional Committees play an important role in government, as they oversee the executive branch agencies which monitor government spending and provide their expertise. The three branches of government Legislative, Executive, and Judicial branch functions is to make laws, enforce law and determine whether laws violate the Constitution.
