Elizabeth Bishop was born an only child on February 8, 1911 in Worcester, Massachusetts. Her father died when she was eight months old and at the age of five her mother was committed into a mental institution. At the age of three Elizabeth moved to Great Village, Nova Scotia, with her grandparents on her mother’s side but was taken three years later to live with her father's family in Worcester and Boston where she attended high school and then went to Vassar. While at Vassar she met the poet Marianne Moore and the two became close friends. The two were happy together for twelve years in Samambaia, but due to depression, alcoholism, and adultery Lota Soares committed suicide on September 25, 1967. Later Elizabeth had begun teaching once her inheritance started to dwindle in 1970 at Washington University before teaching at Harvard for seven years. In 1971 Elizabeth started a relationship with Alice Methfessel. In 1977 she published her book Geography that would be her last. Bishop died from a cerebral aneurysm in her apartment in Boston on October 6, 1979. Elizabeth was known for her reticent poetic style, she writes stories of what she has gone through in her poems and uses metaphors. Bishop was also a strong believer in the feminist movement. In her poems Elizabeth does not like to show her emotions, but her poems are so deep those who read her poems can feel her emotion and uses reputation to address how important the phrase is. Her knowledge of geography won her many honors; She received a total of nineteen awards and honors during her lifetime, including, the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award, the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award, and the Harriet Monroe Poetry
