The Crucible is by Arthur Miller and is about the Salem witch trails, which takes place in 1692. Two of the main characters are Elizabeth Proctor and Mary Warren these women are important in this story because Elizabeth is one of the many accused of being a witch and Mary is friends with the girls who accused innocent women of witchcraft including Elizabeth, she also lives and works for the Proctors. Elizabeth is a good Christian woman, but has been somewhat distant to her husband, John Proctor because she thinks he cheated on her and Mary is a young seventeen-year-old girl that regrets what she has done with her friends, but is terrified of what they will do to her if she told the truth about what she has watch what the girls have participated in. Elizabeth is married with three young children, while pregnant with her child she has been suspicious of her husband still having an affair with their past housekeeper “you were alone with her?” (Miller51). This shows that the affair that john was having is still affecting their marriage. Another thing that is difficult for Elizabeth is Mary, who lives with them and their housekeeper is friends with Abigail Williams, the girl who was their housekeeper in the past and …show more content…

Mary mostly regrets watching the girls dance in the woods, by telling Abigail “Abby we’ve got to tell. Witchery’s a hangin’ like they done in Boston two years ago! We must tell the truth, Abby! You’ll only be whipped for dancin’, and the other things! (Miller18) which are the things that started all the people of Salem talking about witches and hanging innocent people. Once she realized she must tell the truth she is more terrified of Abigail than John, so when her and all the girls are in court the girls act like Mary is putting a spell on them which cause her to later lie in court and say that John made her sign the devils book.
