In the play John Proctor makes the descision to tell the court that he had relations with Abigail Williams. This results in Elizabeth having to answer a tough question. Is your husband a lecher? There is two characters named John Proctor a harsh, man.who speaks his mind and also is; Elizabeth is often cold and is John’s wife. John is an aggressive soul and Elizabeth Proctor who is very scared and constantly worried.
Proctors final act was honor. Proctors actions were noble, he was a very honorable man. His actions really helped him and his family name. In the passage of the book ¨The Crucible” John Proctor says ¨i have given you my soul, let me keep my family name.¨ This statement is very noble.
The Crucible is by Arthur Miller and is about the Salem witch trails, which takes place in 1692. Two of the main characters are Elizabeth Proctor and Mary Warren these women are important in this story because Elizabeth is one of the many accused of being a witch and Mary is friends with the girls who accused innocent women of witchcraft including Elizabeth, she also lives and works for the Proctors. Elizabeth is a good Christian woman, but has been somewhat distant to her husband, John Proctor because she thinks he cheated on her and Mary is a young seventeen-year-old girl that regrets what she has done with her friends, but is terrified of what they will do to her if she told the truth about what she has watch what the girls have participated in. Elizabeth is married with three young children, while pregnant with her child she has been suspicious of her husband still having an affair with their past housekeeper “you were alone with her?” (Miller51).
“The Crucible,” an Arthur Miller play, is a story during the Salem Witchcraft trials, where accusations of witchcraft were made. Elizabeth, the wife of John Proctor, found out that John had an affair with a young seventeen year old, Abigail Williams. Goody Proctor displays a disturbed tone as suspicion rose between John and Abigail’s relationship. John proctor is angered and displays an indignant tone towards Elizabeth for not trusting him. When Elizabeth tells Mr. Proctor, “then go and tell her she’s a whore,” Goody Proctor wants John to defame Abigail because she knows what happened between them.
The name of my book in “The Crucible.” The book was written by Arthur Miller and published in 1952. The setting is in Salem, Massachusetts in 1962 during The Salem Witch Trials. This book is also a drama or play. John Proctor, Abigail Williams and Reverend John Hale are just a few of the main characters in this book.
A courageous character is that of which shows bravery, one who is not deterred by danger or pain. There are many characters who exhibit courage throughout The Crucible. However, there is one character in particular who stands out the most throughout the play. John Proctor seems to be the most courageous because he does several things no other character would even think of doing. Several times throughout the play, Proctor speaks out in opposition to Reverend Parris.
“He was the kind of man, powerful of body, even tempered, and not easily led (Arthur 19). Arthur Miller’s, The Crucible, portrays John Proctor as a guilty husband that only holds on to two things, his wife and his reputation. Despite his efforts to save both, he was ultimately hung for being accused of witchcraft, defending both his wife and reputation until his last breath. While both John Procter and I care about our reputations and have a well kept temper, we have priotitized our relationships completely differant. John Procter and I have the ability to hide our anger well, but when pushed too far can seem to explode in a state of malice.
Because reputation in the Puritan society was highly valuable, change in tolerating viewpoints other than their own was unlikely. Change, however, demonstrates character development. Characters such as John Proctor, Reverend Hale, and Mary Warren show development throughout the play in which Hale acknowledges his mistakes, Proctor sacrifices his reputation and honor, and Mary deteriorates into a weaker character. Reverend Hale enters the play in Act I as a well-respected witch hunter from Beverly who investigates the supernatural occurrences in Salem.
In the pristine 17th century Christian community, it became standardized in accordance to the Bible that, “Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, when they see your respectful and pure conduct” (English Standard Version, 1 Peter 3:1). Most wives in Salem during this time period closely follow their role outlined in the holy scripture, but Elizabeth Proctor undergoes a journey that alters her perception on this religious fixation. People should always speak out if something bad is happening, no matter if they are standing against one person or a whole army. People can always be wrong and will sometimes need someone to push them into the right direction. John Proctor, a character in the novel The Crucible by Arthur Miller who is a farmer and is married to a woman accused of witchcraft named Elizabeth, does not agree with the witchcraft trials going on in Salem at that time. He tries to go to court with Mary Warren, a girl who was originally part of the scheme, but now says that it is fake, to prove that the witch trials are all a hoax.
As time has passed, throughout history, during different periods of time there are parallels. There are three eras that we are focussed on, where there are three types of people during each era. The three different eras that we’re focusing on, are The Salem Witch Trials (1600s), The McCarthy Era (1950s), and Today (2000s); the three types of people are the people who are the reasons why there’s accusations towards the accused, the accused, and finally the accusers. In The Crucible, or during the Salem Witch Trials, the person that’s the reason why characters were accused is John Proctor. The accuser in the play, who decides to point fingers at everyone, is Abigail Williams.
