The Embargo Act of 1807 took place in the times of the Napoleonic Wars. These wars took place from 1803-1815 and consisted of fighting between the french and the european powers over various global conflicts. In these wars Napoleon conquered and ruled a large portion of Europe. The British wanted this no longer because of the political and social impact he had on not only them but also, the world. During these wars on June 22, 1807 an event in history called the Chesapeake- Leopard Affair took place. This was the tipping point for the United States. It happened near Norfolk, Virginia between the British ship, Leopard, and the American ship, Chesapeake. In this incident the leopard ship attacked the Chesapeake in search of deserters. When attacked the Chesapeake was unprepared for battle and forced to surrender quickly. The British took four crew members and hung one under the charges of desertion. This altercation created tension amongst Americans and many wanted to defend their country with some type of response. Many called out a cry for war but, Thomas Jefferson did not think this was best and instead chose to take economic measures. This act made it impossible for American ships to trade in foreign ports. Although trade was an important part of the countries financial stance there were thought to be larger issues at hand, like defending America’s honor. Staying neutral in the Napoleonic War was becoming a hassle on the United States because of all the trading laws the French and British were assigning to neutral countries and the false entitlement they had on seizing american ships.
