Top Emerging Artists Over the Last Decade

There are many emerging artists throughout the past ten years that have been influential in the music industry. Some have changed the way music is played by creating new sounds and others influenced meaningful stories through music. There are six singers who have had an immense impact on the music industry lately, Drake, Selena Gomez, Kendrick Lamar, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, and Adele. The success of these six individuals over the past couple years has shaped the music industry of today. These singers have very different, unique sounds, but have impacted music in different ways. Kendrick Lamar Duckworth was born in Compton, California in 1987. Lamar’s music is greatly influenced by the rough life he lived while growing up. Like Drake, Lamar got his musical break by releasing mix tapes under the name K-Dot. In 2003, he released a mixtape named, Youngest Head Nigga in Charge, which landed him a record deal with Top Dawg Entertainment. He released two more mix tapes under them, Training Day and C4. In 2010, Lamar started going by his own name, releasing another mix tape, Overly Dedicated. In the same year, he released his first album, Section.80. (Eells 2015) Lamar eventually signed under Dr. Dre’s record label, Aftermath Entertainment, which sent his career soaring. In 2012, he released the album, good kid, m.A.A.d city, which featured two hit singles. Recently, Lamar released two albums, To Pimp a Butterfly, which was nominated for eleven Grammy’s, and untitled unmastered, which ended up at the top of the U.S. Billboard 200. Lamar changed hip-hip by making it competitive again by challenging other rappers to improve themselves. Another way he changed hip-hop is by telling stories of cultural and thought-provoking ideas.
