Emily Dickinson It was only after Emily Dickinson’s death when her sister Lavnia and her brother Austin realized how dedicated to her art she was. When Emily died nearly 2,000 poems were found amongst her papers. Emily Dickinson was one of America’s best poets. Dickinson was born December 10, 1830 in Amherst Mass. She was born into a severely religious puritanical family. They lived in New England for eight generations. She went to school at Amherst Academy (Dickinson). Emily also attended school at Mount Holyoke Female Seminary, South Hadley, Mass. (Wiggins). As a girl, Emily was kept home because her parents thought she was sick. At her school teachers and students recognized her for her prodigious abilities in composition (“Emily Dickinson”). Her father Edward Dickinson was a Whig lawyer. He also served as a treasure of the collage and served one term in congress. (“Emily Dickinson”). Higginson recognized her genius and became her correspondent and mentor. Dickinson frequently compressed her poems into a brief stanza forms and a few combinations of Lambic tetrameter and trimester lines (Dickinson). Emily’s religious faith at church as well as at home that ruled the authors early years was Evangelical Calvinism. That religion is center around the belief that all humans were born totally deprived and can be saved only if they accept the vicarious sacrifice of Jesus Christ (Wiggins).only about ten of 1,800 of Emily Dickinson’s poems are known to have been published in her lifetime. Emily also excelled in other subjects in school most nobly Latin and sciences. Botany inspired Emily to assemble a large number of plants identified by their Latin names. Emily and her sister never married so they remain at home. While their brother married and moved next door (“Emily
