Through the manipulation of poetic devices and language techniques, it is evident that Emily Dickinson Poe's poetry is and will continue to be valued for its evocative themes and relevance to death. The two poems that will be analysed are, The last night that she lived, 1924 and the Bustle in a house, 1866 both written by Emily Dickinson. Her poetry has intrigued readers for generations as she strongly explores a world of depressing emotions. She was able to write realistically as she was a carer for her sick mother but Dickinson also suffered from her own illnesses of depression and anxiety which reflected in her writing. This poem depicts the emotions and activity that is experienced after a death. The word “Bustle” which is in the first sentence refers to activity. Bustle means the movement of cheerful activity. It is almost insensitive to be happy after a loved one’s death. Dickinson capitalises “House, Morning and Death” which lets the reader understand the experiences of death. When people die there is a time to morn however this poem describes the picking up of pieces and moving on with life without that person. She captivates an unusual feeling within the poem. Dickinson has cleverly used the word “Morning” to be of two meanings. One is the early morning after the death of a loved one but also ‘mourning’, the emotion of loss that comes along with it. The line that follows says “The sweeping of the heart” by this she explains the overwhelming grief that death brings but however signifies that the heartbreak should not be felt over a long period of time but to instead put your feelings and love away and live your life. This poem skilfully shifts emotions and experiences from shock of the death to the emotions of lost love. Poetic devices were used throughout the poem to convey the hurt and loss that is depicted in her writing. She uses poetic devices such as personification and symbolism.
