Eaton v. Brant County Board of Education, [1997] 1 S.C.R. 241 (Jennifer) This case involves Emily Eaton versus the Brant Board of Education, which started in Ontario and was brought to the Supreme Court of Canada in 1997. Emily Eaton a 12 year old girl with cerebral palsy, a disorder that limits the movements of your muscles, was not able to communicate in any way and thus her parents had to make decisions on her behalf. After being in a regular classroom from grade 1 to grade 3 with a personal assistant, the school board had felt that Emily had not made significant progress in being able to communicate and worried about her safety. When he was 19 years old, Terry had found out that he had cancer in his right leg. His leg could not be saved as the cancer had developed too far and needed to be amputated. His leg was cut off 6 inches above the knee. The night before getting the procedure done, he had read about an amputee runner which inspires him to start running after the procedure was complete. 2 years later he starts training for his cross-Canada marathon of hope, which is to raise money for cancer research and to spread awareness. In April 1980, Terry begins his marathon in St John’s, Newfoundland Land where he runs about 42 km a day through 6 provinces. In September of the same year, Terry stops in Thunder Bar, Ontario before returning to British Columbia for treatment as his cancer had spread to his lungs. The next day the CEO of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts informs the Fox family that he has organized a fundraising run that will take place every year …show more content…

Thus, Terry’s dream is slowly being reached as he gains support from many people, helping him spread awareness as well as raise money. He also gets recognized for many things and starts winning awards and titles, such as the Order of Dogwood, The Sword of Hope, outstanding athletic accomplishment, as well as many others. In June of the following year Terry had passed away at The Royal Columbian Hospital, New Westminster, British Columbia, as he reached his goal of gaining $1 from every Canadian; there were 24.1 million Canadians in Canada at the time and from his marathon Terry had raised $24.17 million. Even after his death, Terry still inspires many, received many awards and titles, as well as monuments. Thus, Terry Fox was a very impactful Canadian citizen who was significant in improving ability rights as he showed how although he was disabled, he was able to make a huge change and reach his dream of spreading awareness and raising money for cancer research. His legacy is still being continued today as he inspires many others to follow in his footsteps. David C. Onley
