The short stories “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner and Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” both have psychological similarities. These stories both use the effect of gothic literature to give the readers a more vivid picture of the characters dark, gloomy, and depressed feelings. Each main character in these two stories have a psychological trouble or guilt that is functioning in their brain. William Faulkner and Edgar Allen Poe both have been said to suffer from depression and it seems as they expressed their feelings throughout their writings, they also in a way put the negative feelings they possessed into these two characters. Treatment is usually lifelong and often involves a combination of medications, psychotherapy, and coordinated specialty care services. Schizophrenic tendencies are seen in both “A Rose For Emily” and “The Fall of the House of Usher” The main character in “A Rose For Emily” is Miss Emily Grierson. Throughout the story, Emily’s bizarre behavior makes you realize she is different than most people. She possesses tendencies of those who suffer from schizophrenia. For example, Miss Emily stated "I want some poison," she said to the druggist. She was over thirty then, still a slight woman” (Faulkner 3) The first assumption that can be made from this statement is that Miss Emily was suffering from her disorder and was going to poison herself, that is also what most people in the town believed however, that is not the case. [66].” (Poe, 24) From my understanding at the time of reading, Lady Madeline is dead, Roderick is experiencing over sensory from his psychological state. Later in the story it told that Lady Madeline is in fact alive. She as well seems to suffer from some psychological disorder. Schizophrenia can be in many different forms, I personally believe Roderick and Madeline both suffer from Schizophrenia.The description of Schizophrenia is related as ”A hallucination occurs when environmental, emotional, or physical factors such as stress, medication, extreme fatigue, or mental illness cause the mechanism within the brain that helps to distinguish conscious perceptions from internal, memory-based perceptions to misfire.” (Medical Dictionary, description) Roderick Usher has his demons, he is simply not in a right state of mind. His demons are pushing him out of reality and taking control.
