The movies Emma (1996) and Clueless (1995) are slight adaptation based on the book Emma by Jane Austen (1815). In this paper I will be discussing a comparison of similarities and differences between the 1996 film Emma starring Gwyneth Paltrow, and the 1995 film Clueless starring Alicia Silverstone. I will be discussing the comparison between the time, the place, and the people in both films.
In the movie Emma we follow a Governess’ daughter played by Gwyneth Paltrow (Emma), as she attempts to play matchmaker, believing in herself that she is good at it. This film is set in late 20th century Beverly Hills, California, where Cher is an almost 16 year old High School student who wants to play matchmaker with her teachers in hopes that if they are not miserable that she could argue a better grade for those two classes. Then a new student named Tai played by (Brittany Murphy) shows up to the school and Cher deems Tai to be the next new project for her to “makeover”. After giving Tai a makeover Cher attempts to hook her up with several students deeming Travis (a skater) not worthy of her. First she tries to hook Tai up with Elton the smart rich and handsome guy of the group. After realizing that Elton is into Cher she drops that idea. She begins to focus on herself when a new student (Christian) comes to the school, thinking that she and Christian would make a great couple she attempts to win him over only to find out he is gay.
