Bullying harms people. In “The Girl Who Loved Her Horses” Drew Hayden Taylor explored that emotional abuse can negatively impact people. Danielle experienced many emotional abuse in her life such as getting bullied at school and at home by her mother and her mother’s boyfriend. This can result in major side effects to a child's life such as mental issues, depression, and stress. “Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me.” This means that people can not be hurt by impolite words that are said to them, but in this case Danille was hurt constantly by these impolite words.

Words can either motivate or discourage someone. It is determined by what is stated to a person. This phrase is completely contradictory to Danielle's life. Danielle was frequently hurt when others made unpleasant comments to her. As stated by Danielle in the play, her mother's boyfriend was often making fun of her. Not only the boyfriend, but also William, made a mistake and spoke disrespectfully to Danielle. For example, when William labeled her drawings stupid and kept forcing Danielle to draw a dog instead of a horse. As previously said, Danielles developed mental disorders as a result of everyone's ill-mannered behavior towards her. Furthermore, in the play, Danielle was away from her home for two days. She didn't trust her parents and didn't want to go to Toronto with them after everything they said to her and the way they treated her. Danielle should have formed positive interactions with others, which is vital for her mental health. She could also have been physically active, such as joining a sports team, which could have distracted her from everything else going on in her life.
