Generally, when a person is put on the spot they suddenly feel different from those around them. Jonas experiences this type of situation first hand. Lois Lowry uses this moment to create anxious and anguished tones in chapters 7 or 8 of The Giver by utilizing specific words and phrases. The first tone Lowry creates through careful wording during the Ceremony of Twelve is anxious.
In the novel, It Ends With Us, by Colleen Hoover, Lily Bloom (the narrator of the novel) faces many emotional events throughout a small period of her life. All within a year she experienced love, betrayal, heartbreak, divorce and many other life changing events. Lily and her husband, Ryle Kindcaid, recently ran off and eloped in Las Vegas. All was well but then Ryle found the phone number of Lily’s first love, Atlas Corragian, hidden in her phone case. In the wave of anger Ryle felt he stormed out of their shared apartment but Lily chased him.
The memories that Jonas is exposed to cause him to wish to escape his “perfect” community that has been kept the same for years. Once Jonas experiences these true emotions, he realizes that the feelings expressed in his society are nowhere near the level of depth that true feelings possess, thus reinforcing the theme. “But now Jonas had experienced real sadness... In the end of chapter 22, it said, “He wept because he was afraid now that he could not save Gabriel, he no longer cared about himself.” (Lowry 218). This piece of evidence shows that Jonas, had he not been trying his hardest to keep Gabriel alive, would have been fine with dying due to the fact he didn’t care about his life or what happened to him. The only thing keeping him alive was his reliance on the fact that Gabe needed him which proves that he relies on Gabe just to keep surviving. In addition there were multiple other quotes proving this such as , “The Giver hugged him.
The cliffhanger ending is more powerful because we are left to wonder Jonas and Gabriel’s fate and we don’t have anything decided for us. In chapter 23 Lowry writes, “For the first time he heard something that he knew to be music. He heard people signing”(179). Since Jonas had never heard music before it makes us wonder how he knows what it is. He could be dead and be hearing music or he could be having a memory from the Giver but we don’t really know.
Feelings and Emotion Different feelings and emotion are not known in the community within the people. The Giver and Jonas are the only true people that know how to feel the different emotions. Every night at the conclusion of their evening meal one of the rituals is the evening telling of feelings.
