The adage, “Loneliness does not have to come from the lacking of people around you, but from being unable to communicate the things that seem important to you,” is an influential aphorism because it is associated with overcoming obstacles and trying to communicate to those around us. The story, “Zebra” by Chaim Potok and the poem, “The Rider” by Naomi. S. Nye both articulate the importance of transitioning our emotions by showing the main character or the speaker dealing with their emotions. While there are multiple themes discussed in these texts, it is forthright that both stories positively treat the theme of emotional healing, through the importance of hobbies we all enjoy. Primarily, the theme of emotional healing can take many forms, but by participating in activities one enjoys, one can overcome those obstacles in life. These changes might accumulate our confidence level. The poem “The Rider” by Naomi S. Nye summarizes that a boy was trying to run away from loneliness by rolling skating, trying to be as fast as he could be. On the other hand, the speaker wondered whether doing other activities like bicycling and observing the azaleas, would have the same emotional impact. In the text it states, “To leave your loneliness panting behind you on some street corner while you float free into a cloud of sudden azaleas,” (stanza 4 line 2) This demonstrates that by performing hobbies that we enjoy we can totally dive into a hobby which we do not have to care about anything else around us.
