Empathy is the ability to place oneself into or share another person’s feelings. As a funeral director, families are paying us to be their stable minds during the midst of their unstable minds and hearts. We go through this program and schooling process to learn how to speak to families and help them cope with their situation. It’s hard to place yourself into another person’s feelings because we all feel and cope with things differently. However, there are certain words and phrases we, as funeral directors, can use when communicating with families to help them cope with the situation, as well as, let them realize we do care about them individually and as a family. The satisfaction and ability to be a part of the last thing one can do for the deceased and their family is why I am in this profession. No matter the circumstances or age, death is never easy and I feel a need and a passion to do whatever I can to honor the deceased and provide support and guidance to the family. The ability to be responsible for quality and respectful services which allow the family to have no concerns or worries during a very difficult time is crucial and I would like to be able to provide those services. After working at Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home last summer, I quickly came to the conclusion that there truly is no better feeling than when a family thanks you for providing them with the best support, while also recognizing their loved one through a meaningful tribute service so they have the opportunity to say their final goodbye to their loved one. The hugs, handshakes, smiles and tears exchanged through families and funeral directors let the family know as a friendly reminder that we are here for them.
