1. Empowerment of individuals Empowerment is when an individual is encouraged by a health and care professional. The group of older people with high support needs is growing, becoming increasingly diverse and changing, as new act groups appear and the occurrence of some conditions, such as dementia, increases. Older people with high support needs, their supporters and those working with them face a number of challenges in each of these settings. These may include: • Affordability • Dementia & Mental Capacity • Social Separation • Involving & Supporting Carers • End-Of-Life Care Physically Rick is allowed to gain independence in his own care home and feel like it’s his own home as he is given the privilege to walk around, either if it is the garden or in the care home itself he is still able to walk and be allowed to join activities that may take place. To empower Rick he has been given a walking stick so he can feel empowered. For example: Rick is allowed to join any activities that include exercising with the help of a staff as he is able to move physically. Intellectually, playing the memory game helps Rick as it gives him sense of achievement that he has got the answer correct as he can also see how the nurses are pleased as he is succeeding so therefore he is content. 2. …show more content…

Promotion of choice Home care has traditionally meant numerous forms of help at home allowing older people to reserve self-respect and independence through assistance with cleaning, laundry and shopping or perhaps help with a bath, hair washing and company. In Selby’s care home the individuals in the care home have the right to choose what activities they want to do, what to eat, what to watch and also what to do along with other happenings. Promotion of choice can happen many ways for Rick and also other individuals in a health and social care
