Building on that idea, we can find examples in books, movies, and songs, all the different ways that empowerment can happen, or not happen, depending on the circumstances. Using examples from Shoe Dog by Phil Knight, The Outsiders by SE Hinton and “Love Yourz” by J Cole, we will see that individuals are born into circumstances where empowerment is readily available to them, while some must work to achieve it, while still others struggle to avoid having empowerment taken from them by others. Lack of empowerment is a common theme in The Outsiders, which shows the many struggles of the characters through their unfortunate living situations. “I only mean that most greasers do things like that, just like we wear our hair long and dress in blue jeans and T-shirts or leave our shirttails out and wear leather jackets and tennis shoes or boots.
