In the awakening, the fact that Enda has multiple homes is important because they reflect her charging state at mind. The ocean represents freedom and the metaphorical notion death as well but it also represents something that is larger than life and almost impossible to comprehend. Edna must decide who she will be, and this means letting go of assumptions deeply ingrained in her by the society she lives in. Enda is not happy in her marriage, but many marriages are unhappy. Realizing that she is unhappy means confronting all of the ideas that it is only her husband's feelings that matter.
