Ender’s Game Novel Study

Depending on a person's mentality, isolation may have a variety of effects on them. Orson Scott Card’s novel Ender’s Game shows the protagonist Andrew “Ender” Wiggin undergo forced isolation as part of a test. This article demonstrates how this forced seclusion and desolate state causes Ender to become a more independent soldier, which contributes to Ender’s unsympathetic nature, and helps him prepare for the spoils of war.

Ender’s promotion to a “Toon Leader” of Phoenix army and the facilitator of trainings to Launchies, leaves him with little time for his friends. Over time his camaraderie with his friends deteriorates and he struggles to be sincere with anyone. This is exemplified when Ender thinks “But with his old friends there was no laughter, no remembering. Just work” (Card 139). At the same time, Ender misses his early years at the Battle School. However, his friends now regard him as a teacher and “legendary soldier”. They stopped including Ender in their friendly conversations. Ender yearns to be a part of his old company but is frustrated at being excluded instead. This is evident from Ender’s realisation of his exclusion by his friends to for which he states “How could they think I was part of it? Did I laugh? Did I join in? Just stood there, watching, like a teacher” (Card 140). Ender grows increasingly callous toward his close ones as a result of his friends' refusal to include him in their friendship. Ender realises that he has been played in the hand of Graff whereby he has been isolated from all his emotional attachments to make him a fighting machine he is planned to be made into. By the time Ender becomes the commander of “Dragon” army, he has a build up of anger and frustration. This comes out in the form of subconscious bullying directed towards Bean, who Ender sees
