Course Description: Author John Hawkes once wrote “I began to write fiction on the assumption that the true enemies of the novel were plot, character, setting and theme.” The goal of this class will be to encourage experimentation as well as innovation in the genres of micro-fiction, short fiction, the novel and poetry. Students (who, from this point on, will be referred to as “writers” or “enemies”) will discuss the techniques of published authors who write outside the confines of “the enemies of fiction” i.e.- plot, character, setting and theme. Throughout this course we will attempt to define experimental works in terms of craft. We writers will ask ourselves where our inspiration comes from. Enemies will learn from published authors, from
