Over the decades, people seem to forget what the word and action of sleep means. As a living human, sleep is necessary for survival, without it, nothing would get done. Coffee has always been a part of culture, going back to the age of Ethiopia and even Istanbul in the 15th century (Graf). The coffee bean has been traded, given only to royalty as a sign of respect, and even banned throughout its development in history. All leading up to the current 21st century Starbucks Coffee chains and coffee shops surviving off of sleepless college students or busy adults trying to get that jolt of energy throughout the day. The newest option began in 1987 when the energy drink called Red Bull was created (Graf). Yet, energy drinks were not something people drank to stay awake. During the 1930s in the UK, Thomas Beecham created a drink to help give back energy to patients that were seriously ill and make them feel more human, this drink was called Lucozade energy and can still be bought to this day, (Lucozade). Lucozade fizzled out in the states when Red Bull and other companies started developing energy drinks dominating the rest of the world. The energy drink obsession in the United States truly started to flourish in the 80’s because these drinks were new and exciting and actually worked to keep the body awake. After Red Bull, then Monster was developed, companies continued to pop up and come up with newer ideas like smaller, more quick “shots” of energy, like 5-Hour Energy was placed on the shelves. Even energy drinks mixed with alcohol, called Four Locos, began to pop up and were being sold at the local supermarkets and drug stores. People were getting a better boost of energy and sales were booming like never before, until the truth began showing through. Energy drinks are poising the human body. They have been created and recreated over and over again until the mixture is too good to be true.
