In the texts The Disadvantages of Drinking Energy Drinks by Richard Webber, and Secrets of the Superhuman Food Pyramid: Pros and Cons of Sports Drinks by Ben Greenfield both discuss energy drinks and their effects, both good and bad. Though some may think that energy drinks are good for you, they are proven to be the opposite. Energy drinks cause many health conditions, have many disadvantages, and contain things that should not be consumed into the human body. The first text, Webber discusses the health conditions that energy drinks cause. Explaining the conditions, the author starts off` by stating “caffeine at these levels could cause headache, insomnia, nervousness and a rapid heartbeat,”(Webber) and then later on Webber continues to focus on the health conditions by stating that “more serious side effects from consuming excessive caffeine include …show more content…
He mentions HFCS which is a high fructose corn syrup and explains that its purpose is to make the drink have a more captivating taste, and then further discusses how bad it is for the body. “HFCS has been associated with a host of negative health effects such as abnormal weight gain, decreased brain function, liver fibrosis, type 2 diabetes mellitus, obesity, among others,” (Greenfield) which shows that this type of corn syrup has multiple down sides on its own. However, HFCS is not the only factor of energy drinks the author talks about. Energy drinks that are sold in plastic bottles contain a chemical called Bisphenol A (BPA). “Constant exposure to this industrial chemical has been linked to a host of conditions such as obesity, early onset puberty in American girls, low testosterone levels, dental problems, diabetes, breast cancer, reproductive disorders, behavioral changes, among others,” states Greenfield.
