Everyone needs to struggle in order to preform better. Writing has always been a strength of mine, but I found it a challenge to move from the high school, six-paragraph essay format that I had grown accustomed to. Throught the course of this semester, I was able to acquire many different skills in ENG 1101 that have helped me transition into more complex writing. These include various writing techniques, MLA formatting, writing for purpose, convincing my arguments and finding and properly using sources. The portfolio I have submitted is comprised of three works of writing that I completed for ENG 1101 over the last three months. I was able to become proficient in this through the three different essays. These essays included a personal narrative, an analytical and argumentive essay. When I first began my personal narrative, "Learning to Ride A Bike," I dreaded it. For me, writing about a personal experience is difficult. The main purpose of a narrative is to express yourself, but I also had to keep in mind that I had an audience as well. In addition to writing for purpose, I was also able to use evidence to form and support arguments in a research paper. I did this when composing my essay "Cosmetic Surgery: A Risky Investment." This kind of writing demanded more from me than the personal narrative. It required supporting evidence from three academic journals, along with my own opionion which I used to support my thesis and back argumentative points. By doing this, it allowed me to hopefully convince an adudience to consider my standpoint. I also realized that I ddin 't have to necessarily choose the side I believed in, just the one that would create a more effective argument. I 've also learned how to analyze authors motives and how he/she conveys their ideas. Authors, especially those of opinion news columns, use rhetorics to get their points across. I was able to further better omyself as writers in learning communicate my ideas in my own papers. Through writing my analytical essay about Leonard Pitts ' article "Terrorists usher in the end of satire", I was able to get an idea of the author 's message and his intended audience, although I did not necessarily agree with his
