A language achieves a real global status when it develops a special role that is recognized in every country. This might seem like stating the obvious, but it is not, for the notion of special role has many facets. A global language is spoken internationally, which is learned by many people as a second language, the most popular one being English. There are two main ways in which this can be done. Firstly, a language can be made official language of a country, to be used as a medium of communication in such domains. A language can be the medium of communication in such a way that is used in the laws, court, the media and the educational system.
