The Introduction to English major course is required for all English majors to help guide students throughout their degree and to discuss various careers along with how to write successfully. The general idea of the course seemed to make sense and help with preparing students throughout their degree but there were some things that did not help or apply to the needs some may have had. The beginning of the semester was not helpful. Most of the students in the course did not want to be teachers with their degree, so it seemed to be a waste of time having discussion with the English faculty and asking them questions about teaching. That way students could ask more questions pertaining to their career ideas. The only other guest speaker was the speaker from Wycliffe Bible translators, which was a unique experience and opened a new door of opportunity for English majors. The Lemire book although was tedious to read due to the one-sided author, overall it laid out various career opportunities and what degrees go with them remarkably well. Even though the Lemire book covered various careers it should not have been a requirement to read at the beginning of the course. The tone of the book was negative, and the author seemed to discourage English majors in putting themselves out there. Reading the text at the beginning of the course probably made some students second guess themselves. Causing fear for the future and put them down. Requiring the book towards the middle of end of the course would be better after everything the students have already learned and had more time to get comfortable in their major. The other readings such as the articles towards the beginning of the course was helpful. That helped reassure English majors that you can do a lot with the degree and that it is not a waste of time.
