Enlightenment Dinner During the 1700’s the philosophical movement called the Enlightenment occurred, this movement brought in new traditions and many people together or in some cases apart. At our dinner we have invited Denis Diderot, Cesare Beccaria, Rene Descartes, Montesquieu, Sir Isaac Newton, John Locke, Voltaire, and Immanuel Kant. We decided to pick these people because they have a wide variety of differences and similar opinions. At one head of the table, sits John Locke this is because he was one of the main influential philosophers of the Enlightenment. He is sitting next to Rene Descartes and Voltaire. This leads to his basis that human beliefs are in God, freedom, and immortality. Therefore, scientific knowledge, morality, and religious beliefs are secure because they are on the same foundation as human autonomy. Denis Diderot, sitting next to Kant, also believes in the freedom of people as well and is extremely humanitarian. This is important because Diderot had to write the encyclopedia on all the knowledge man possesed, which relates to Kanr because he wanted to advance in social reforms. To Diderot’s right is Cesare Beccaria who is sick of injustice and thinks that the death penalty is tortuous and abnormal. This is an important topic to have brought up because it’s a law that wants to get changes. In the enlightenment many new ideas and thoughts were all happening and this is a perfect example. To Cesare’s right is Montesquieu and he thinks that the separation of power is good. Beccaria agrees with him because he thinks they could really influence the Americans with these ideas. Montesquieu was powerful during the Enlightenment because He created the spirit of laws, the separation of powers checks and balances, and he had the idea of 3 branches of government. These are
