The Enuma Elish essentially is a myth of Mesopotamia. It's the Babylonian version of the Sumerian myth that touches on the subjects & discovery of the beginning. Myths were created to answer questions regarding the beginning. Myths were created to answer our curiosity of questions such as where did we come from, how did we came to be, and what's our purpose? A myth is to help us with these answers because we as humans are curious of this and looking for answers. Essentially, it's a mask of a god or the belief of it. It's a way for us to attempt to explain or convey a creator, god, or gods of the human race. Just as in every other myth, "Enuma Elish" sheds light on all of the functions purposes. The mystical function stands for mystical beings, after life, or beyond human life. This function directly uses abstract language such as metaphors to describe itself rather than literal terms you find in concrete language. You see this function and its purpose mentioned in the story when it expresses the lives and situations of the gods, younger and older gods. The cosmological function relates to the cosmos of the world. In other words, it directly relates to the wonders of the world and universe such as how and why we came to be. The story suggests the gods created the humans to help and serve the gods. And then we see the sociological function intertwine in the story. You see this when the moral code and hierarchy is expressed with the explanation of the humanity's lowly position and their purpose to be servants to the gods. So as you can see the four functions are at work within the myth "Enuma Elish". And the meaning and purpose of each function is directly outlined and expressed to the readers' understanding. In my opinion, I find this myth to be an entertaining read and an easy-to-follow read. So it's no wonder that it's easily understood by readers
