Danielle Jackson Carlton - 5 English 11 1 March 2018 The Broken System we call Foster Care Yes foster care is an essential system used to provide loving homes to children, but unfortunately these systems have become broken and can no longer keep kids safe under their care. Everyday children are being placed in foster homes facing abuse, unloving parents, and even death. The system has only progressively gotten worse leaving behind children traumatized to a point where no amount of love or therapy can fix them.
I did most of my research online. My first piece of information came from a website based on Children 's Rights. This site gave me information about average ages in foster care, institutions, and group homes. This sight was very informal about the types of living foster kids can go through. The next site I visited was about What Foster Care is.
The first step in creating family reunification is forming case plan goals, objections, and court orders. Step 2, Progression of visits. As time passes and the child remain in foster care, visits between the child and birth parents will steadily increase in frequency and moderation. It's not uncommon for visits to move from supervised, weekly visits to monitored, weekly visits to unsupervised, weekly visits. Then they will progress from overnights and weekends to several days in a row.
I am a first-generation college student who aged out of the foster care system. My formative experiences in foster care led me the profession of social work. I earned a BSW (San José State University) and MSW (University of Michigan) with a specialization in social policy and evaluation in the practice area of children and youth in families. During my second year of my MSW studies, I was invited to speak at the White House bill-signing ceremony of the Foster Care Independence Act (FCIA), based on my advocacy work to reform the foster care system. This invitation led to an MSW field practicum at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, where I worked on the implementation of the FCIA.
Minors in care show certain themes that can damage their reputation in adulthood. Thirty-eight percent of males and thirty-nine percent of females in detention have a history of being in foster care services (89). One in four foster children report physical or psychological abuse by a foster parent every year. Children with disabilities or a past of abuse are at higher risk for maltreatment in their out-of-home-care (Font, 2015). The young child is at the greatest risk for disturbances in the developing brain if their environment lacks stimulating activities that are needed for physical, emotional, and behavioral growth.
a. Foster parents can have an impact on the lives of a foster child by giving them a safe place to stay where they can feel loved and cared for. Foster parents can also provide the love and support that these children need especially if they came from an abused or neglected home. According to (Hasenecz, 2009) there have been several shocking stories about children being abused and neglected while in foster care or even worse reports of social workers who knew of the abuse and neglect and failed to report it or do anything about
The foster care system is a very sensitive topic to talk about. Especially when it comes to different parenting issues or the mental state of most of the children in this system. Although the things in foster care that happen are sad, it is based on something good. The ideology of these foster care systems is to provide homes for neglected or abused children. Not always do foster care systems take children from their families permanently but they try their hardest to reunify them to their biological families.
An example of environment changing the success of foster care is Hurricane Katrina. After that storm blew over, foster families and homes that were available to send children too were lost. Even today a number of those families have not returned home. It's hard enough to find a home for a child with a great attitude and behaviour but it is even tougher to find
Our foster care system was developed in the 19 century, and it all started with Charles Loring Brace taking in homeless children. The system has come a long way since it started by passing laws, such as the child abuse prevention and treatment act, that protect children, and among another things, however, it still has problems. Some of the major issues they have are children placements, preparing them for adulthood, the rules and regulations with the foster parents, and drug abuse among teens in foster care. Child welfare promises these kids a place to call home, to be loved, supported and cherished, as every child should. Some of these kids go from foster home to another one, which affects them in their development.
There has been a lot of change in the foster care system with the help of laws, government and social organizations support. They changed the financial, emotional, economic situations in the foster care system. According to “Foster care Background and History” a website by Findlaw tells us the the method of foster care has been around since long ago and in U.S the foster care has gone through a lot of hardships and changes overtime. Findlaw says that the foster care system has been around since “ Torah and Bible” Widows that lived in the Christian church took care of orphans and were paid by the Christian church to take care of them. Also, according to the “Quran” they had the same system of widows taking care of children under law.
The foster care systems has and will always be a part of society. The idea of a foster care system has always been around, even if it was not properly attained in the past. There has also been other methods to try to find placement for children with no or bad homes, for example the orphanage train, living with widows or living house to house in a community. Now in today’s time, we have an organized system of foster care with two different types of homes for children. For example we have group homes, which is a care facility that houses six or more children at a time.
In today’s life we are being introduced to more and more medicine all having a different uses we are learning more about the good and bad about these medications. For instances there are children in Foster Care that are being overmedicated , by the people who are supposed to be making them better. They give them a high ducesThese children are have conditions such as this because they might be dealing with depression, or they might be dysfunctional growing up without parents. Having a lifestyle where you feel all alone can have this effect on a child changes how they view life. Feeling lost, and confused isn’t what anyone would ask for .
I couldn’t help but lie. No new kid wants to be known as the "foster kid". It is embarrassing. I get passed around from house to house, and I refer to them as houses because those places are not homes. They are crowded and filled with hatred.
Experiencing rejection and parental unavailability can cause, children develop behavioral patterns that have negative consequences for social-emotional development. Multi placement in foster care is linked, to poor social functioning as well as, emotional difficulties. There are also negative impacts on child behavior when there are multiple placement changes. It makes it hard for children to have a good relationship with their foster parents when they 've, had multiple changes in placement.(Hodges 2156). There are frequent, anxiety and depression diagnoses among foster children.
