Theseus is a demigod who was known for his strategy. He lived with his mother in a hut in a place named Troezen. One day his life changed when he was beaten in a fight with a larger boy and went to the beach to have a wave cover him, but instead the sounds of the waves put him to sleep. He then woke up and saw he had been visited by a bird who told him, “do not fear your enemy’s size, but use it against him.” With the knowledge that the bird bestowed upon him he gained the heroic qualities of strategy and bravery.

In 1791 Thomas Paine wrote a book about America’s demeanor and several centuries later not much has changed. In almost three hundred years buildings have sprung up where forest once thrived, races have come together despite cultural differences, and political lines have rearranged to create the constantly evolving United States of America. The surface of America will never stop changing but, the principles of the American people will always be the same. We as a people will always be accepting of anyone regardless of race and we will always support the right to choose heedless of class. However riots and protestors have begun in an attempt to stop the police officers from treating Americans with such brutality.
Jonathan Edwards’ “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” is a reflection of the Puritan society and their beliefs. In seventeenth-century Massachusetts, the Puritan theocracy that reigned over the new settlers believed in the idea of predestination and in a God that was angry and wrathful. Jonathan Edwards, a beloved preacher, depicted God as a terrifyingly powerful entity that would punish any who did not vehemently worship God. Edwards’ teachings fall in line with the period of his preaching, known as the Great Awakening- a fervent religious revitalization in the New World created to leash in settlers who began leaving the church in favor of The Great Awakening’s philosophical advancements. First and foremost, Jonathan Edwards portrays his God as angry and wrathful.
As it is shown in The Minister’s Black Veil even those that are deemed holy are marked. Similarly to “good Mr. Hooper” we strive to portray an image of innocence (1253). We hide everything behind a black veil, “forgetting that the Omniscient can detect” all of the misdeeds that our hearts bear (1254). Following traditional Socratic procedure, Socrates, in Plato’s Euthyphro, assumes the unfitting role of the ignorant pupil seeking to obtain knowledge from Euthyphro, the prosecutor and self-proclaimed expert on piety. However, as the dialogue progresses and the irony reveals itself, Euthyphro unveils his true ignorance and Socrates emerges as the wise prosecutor who questions the former on his various definitions and understandings of piety. Euthyphro, after having his previous definitions rejected by Socrates, suggests that what is pious is “what all the gods love” (Plato 9e). Immediately, Socrates deconstructs this argument and outlines a simple syntactic analysis of a phrase.
During his discussion with Socrates, Euthyphro agrees with much of Socrates reasoning. One of these many concessions is that “the gods love the pious act because it is pious”. This concession ultimately leads to Socrates defeating Euthyphro’s claim. Therefore, Euthyphro should have answered slightly different than just a defeated “yes”. However, because of Euthyphro’s definition of the pious, equating the pious to the god loved, the statement is circular in understanding, but it remains a true statement.
In the Oedipus myth sophocles conveys a common theme that transcends into antigone as well. The oedipus myth does start the theme of fate and god’s law ruling over all;whilst fate is a big deal in the story, the main theme is that god's law rules over all. In “Antigone” Sophocles conveys that God’s Law is more important than Man’s Law by Antigone directly disobeying Man’s law so she could obey God’s law,by teiresias saying that creon should change his decision because the god’s don’t approve, and by Creon losing everything because he disobeyed God’s law. Antigone directly disobeys Man’s law so she can obey god’s law. Antigone proves that god’s law is more important than man’s law by earning the opinion of the people by following god’s law
In the Bible and Virgil’s The Aeneid, the pursuit of honor and glory is complex, and it does not come without serious consequences and hardships. However, while Jesus and Aeneas both strive to achieve a certain goal due to divine intervention and both overcome certain adversities, their underlying motives and their ultimate outcomes are starkly different. Although it would appear that neither Jesus nor Aeneas would be motivated by personal fame or glory—as they were sent on godly missions, this is not the case in The Aeneid. Jesus acts completely selflessly as he teaches others about the Kingdom of God and how to live their lives, whereas Aeneas is working to win greatness for his ancestors as he was sent by the gods to settle and create an
Character Sketch on “The Robe” In the story “The Robe” by Lloyd C. Douglas, Marcellus Lucan Gallio, a Roman Tribune, who has done his public duty carries out the Crucifixion of Christ and wins Christ’s garment in a game of dice. Marcellus has abandoned the worship of Gods, unlike his noble servant, Demetrius, who desire to keep the Robe, felt his enslavement to Marcellus is a participation in the destruction of Jesus and escapes with the Robe. As the story progresses, Marcellus guilt at the role he played in Christ’s Crucifixion has been troubling him, he then sets forth on a quest to find the truth about the Nazarene’s robe. Over time, Marcellus quest reaches to the very roots and heart of Christianity and is set in a spiritual longing and ultimate redemption.
However, true Christianity comes with knowing that we are and never will be perfect, but that God is strong in our weaknesses. Therefore, there is really no reason for the minister to be hiding behind his veil. Another example of irony in “The Minister’s Black Veil” comes with the initial reaction of the people. At first, they look at their own minister and the veil he is wearing in horror (Hawthorne 281).
Christianity has always been subjective and ambiguous, which allows for theories and speculation to develop regarding the religion’s values and characteristics. A key matter in theology seeks to understand those values and to identify a model of living that guides people away from corruption to remain in God’s image. Athanasius of Alexandria’s On the Incarnation and Friedrich Nietzsche’s The Anti-Christ address this issue with viewpoints that directly contradict each other. Athanasius examines the Incarnation to defend his position that natural human desires corrupt mankind and suggests there is nothing to prevent evil and sin other than God’s salvation while Nietzsche asserts that corruption occurs from a loss of instinctive nature and proposes
A Throne for All Ages The biblical covenants that God makes displayed in Piper’s Article, all of which fulfilled by Jesus, invite mankind to the Kingdom of the Father. Throughout the Bible, these covenants are made between God and people like Abraham, Moses, and Noah. They serve as a spectacular source of faith and help people on earth to realize the Father’s wisdom, power, and love he has to share. His covenants with man can be referred to as His own “self-written job description,” how He works to keep people on a good path in life.
Besides Jesus, Paul, who called himself as an Apostle, was influential in the beginning of Christianity. People even claimed him as the “founder of Christianity”. Paul was the one that brought Jesus’s message to the world. He went on three missionary journeys, and the fourth journey to Rome in order to spread Christian faith and the development of its various institutions. In addition of his responsible of geographically and culturally expanding Christian movement, he also extended it as well as ethnic lines.
