Epic Heroes In The Odyssey And The Princess Bride

In the epic poem, The Odyssey, by Homer, and the movie, The Princess Bride, directed by Rob Reiner, both epic heroes have lots of metaphorical similarities, but also have drastic differences. In The Odyssey, a man named Odysseus is trying to sail home to Ithaca, but runs into lots of problems. In The Princess Bride, a side character named Inigo is on a quest to kill his father’s murderer. Both heroes, Odysseus and Inigo eventually reach a low point, but then miraculously return to greatness; however, Odysseus and Inigo have different quests.

The epic heroes have different quests, and a contrasting amount of enemies. Odysseus and Inigo had different amounts of enemies throughout the stories. During Odysseus’ journey home, and even in Ithaca, he made a lot of enemies. Odysseus and his crew made stops at random places, and caused trouble. For example, on the Island of Cyclopes, Odysseus went into Polyphemus’ cave, stabbed him in the eye, then while sailing away, Polyphemus asked Poseidon to get revenge on Odysseus. In this one of many conflicts, Odysseus makes TWO powerful enemies. Unlike Odysseus, Inigo truly, only, had one enemy his whole life. Inigo dedicated his life to sword fighting and hunting down the 6-fingered man, so that he could kill the 6-fingered man. “After twenty years, at last, my father’s soul will be at peace.” (82). Both epic heroes had different intentions, therefore making their personal stories vary. Odysseus’ quest was to return to his home, Ithaca. Inigo’s goal was to murder his father’s murderer, so his father’s spirit would be at peace. One of the most key elements in an epic hero’s story is their quest. The quest changes and shapes the whole story, so when two different character’s goals are different, it can create big and unique differences.
