a. Establishing the Validity of the Doctrine
- Coherent explanation of why the doctrine is rational and true
Edwards uses historical examples that are mentioned in the Bible that support his message that all sinners will eventually go to hell, demonstrating that his sermon is reasonably accurate as well as being true.
b. Why Listeners Should Be Convinced
- An extension of the above. Involves an explanation of why the listeners, specifically, should believe in the truth of the doctrine.
Since Edwards quotes the Bible, his listeners will believe every word he says because they regard the Bible as absolute truth. This builds on his credibility causing more and more listeners to actually take interest in what he is saying.
