Moments after the incident George was confronted by Slim along with the other men who were looking for Lennie. Slim helped George off the ground and took him back to the farm to clear his mind. George slowly trailed behind Slim, he began questioning if he did the right thing. Slim began discussing the work that needed to be done before the end of the week when he caught a glimpse of George’s sulking expression. “You did the right thing, George. Ain’t nobody gonna take advantage of your friend no more, isn’t that what’ya always wanted?” Slim said walking in front of George. They were both silent for a while. “Whatta you suppose we do now, fellas?” Slim whispered “Looks like we only got one choice,” Crooks said looking up at the men, “We have to take our punishment. What other options do we have at this point?” Candy walks over to the old window and rests his hands on the rotting wood frame. Staring out into the forest he says, “We could do one thing, but it’s too risky” “I’m game for anything at this point,” says Slim with Crooks nodding his head in agreement. “I’ve been putting money aside for years now, and with a little help from you guys we can buy our own farm and start our new lives in another state, but we’d have to find George first,” Candy says turning around to face the men. “What are we still sitting here for? Let’s get George and run!” Slim says enthusiastically. They all grab what little possessions they own and quietly make their way to the door checking to make sure nobody hears them. The time is around 2:00 in the morning when then men make their way into the woods. Once the men are far enough away from ranch they all begin hollering for George. Hours pass and no response from George. “Les’ check where Lennie was, maybe he’s there!” As the men make their way through the thick brush, Slim chimes in and asks where his gun went. “I swore I had it when we found Lennie and George. Maybe it dropped on the ground on the way back, I was walking kinda quick since I knew the storm was coming.” Just then crackling gunshots came from across the river. All the men were startled. “George!” Crooks yelled. Slim climbed on top of a large rock to try and see across the river and sure enough there was George lying dead on the ground next to George. “I always knew they were inseparable, I’ve never seen anything like ‘em.” Crooks said shaking his head.
