The basis for The Crucible came from the witch trials which occurred in Salem, Massachusetts during the puritan era. Miller even uses some of the same characters in his dramatized play that were a part of the original witch trials in Salem. In The Crucible, logic and reason play an active role as the counterpart to the fear that fills the Puritan society and the characters themselves. The characters Proctor and Hale represent the voice of reason against the voices of fear. Though they are outnumbered by those who give in to the paranoia, they stick with what they believe is right despite knowing they will become a pariah. On the other hand, Danforth and Parris represent the driving forces of fear and paranoia that plagues the minds of the people in their society. Society’s reaction to their driving force is to comply because to do otherwise is to be an outcast, and to be an outcast could result in one’s death.

It was the third club when my friends started asking me who this Eddie was. Apparently my little brother told them that she was just some minor acquaintance of mine, but when you make celebrities wait for you and your friends to enter the club first and the best VIP room is set aside for you, it kind of say she was more than just a friend. The liquor was flowing, the party was epic, and somewhere during the club hopping, we had changed drivers. How did I know this, my driver was always the one to inform the doorman who I was. When we walked up and tried to walk in, we were met by nearly every bouncer at the club and not one of them looked happy to see us.
We often, as people, look back on the past and think that stuff like that doesn’t happen now. That is not the case though, there are many similarities between the past and the world we live in now. While the environment and technology may change and be different the people don’t. One of these past situations is the Salem Witch Trials. We often look back on the decisions made by people in this time and say nothing like that would ever happen.
In The Crucibles, the Puritans believe that bad luck can come to an entire community if just one member of the congregation sins. This explains, their personal turmoil over their neighbor’s affairs. With that being said, I believe that “one bad apple can spoil the barrel”. I believe that the actions of your neighbors and classmates can and cannot dictate or foreshadow your own choices and future. I do not entirely believe that they dictate your choices and future entirely, but I do think that they have some type of influence, whether you believe that or not.

In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, John Proctor has to live with the consequences of his affair with Abigail Williams when he confesses it to the court publicly and he has to live with the consequences of what Elizabeth(his wife) does or says about the affair. Abigail Williams would have had to live with the consequences of her actions the night she and the other girls danced in the woods if she had confessed to doing witchcraft that night. The consequences of the people who did not confess to witchcraft, even though they were innocent, was that they were to be hanged.
