September 11th of 2001, one of New York’s most tragic days, is an episodic memory that will forever be a day of remembrance. The events of this day shattered millions of Americans across the U.S, causing them to feel the same pain as those who were close to each scene. As mentioned in the article “9/11 Attacks,” “nineteen militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda, hijacked four airliners and carried out suicide attacks against several targets in the United States.” Two of the planes that were hijacked flew into the Twin Towers standing in New York City. It changed our country’s political landscape forever. According to the article “9/11 Memorial,” the towers were targeted not only because of their amazing view but because for a brief period upon their completion in 1973, the towers we’re the world’s tallest buildings. “The towers were massive. The North Tower rose 1,368 feet- 1,730 feet with a large antenna- and the South Tower stood 1, 362- feet high.” says the article. Americans on that day didn’t know how to react to such a horrific tragedy. Americans remained in shock. The United States president, at that time George W. Bush, delivered a televised address at 9pm. He addressed that “Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shatter steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve.” On October 2001, the U.S invaded Afghanistan, where al-Qaeda was based. On May of 2011, Bin Laden was killed where he had been hiding in Pakistan. The U.S later on invaded Iraq (2003). The U.S President and other U.S leaders believed Saddam Hussein, the country’s dictator could possibly be hiding weapons to terrorists. Hussein was later on captured and put to
