There are many writers who had an influence on the literature of their time and continue to impact authors today. These are authors such as Frederick Douglas, Jane Austen, and Mark Twain. Among these authors there is a special place for American author and journalist Ernest Hemingway. Hemingway could say so little but tell the reader more than he or she realized. "Hemingway's words are essentially just like any other words, but the way he stirs them together in his own unique formula, a stylistic recipe that no other writer has been able to create" (Timeless). He had three sisters: Marcelline, Ursula, and Carol Hemingway and one brother, Leicester Hemingway. His father Clarence Hemingway and mother Grace Hall Hemingway disapproved of Hemingway’s many marriages. Hemingway married four times his wives: Elizabeth Hadley Richardson, Pauline Pfeiffer, Martha Gellhorn, and Mary Welsh. Ernest was a father of three; John Hadley Nicanor "Jack" Hemingway. Patrick Hemingway, and Gregory. Also, Ernest had twelve grandchildren: Joan, Margaux, Mariel, Mina, Patrick, Edward, Sean, Brendan, Vanessa, Maria, John, and Lorian Hemingway. Also, A Farewell to Arms shows a common technique used by Hemingway; leaving the reader curious and wanting answers. A Farewell to Arms is still considered by many critics to be the best novel ever written about World War I" (Timeless). Ernest got the title of his book from a poem to Queen Elizabeth written by George Peele's …show more content…
In the novella Hemingway uses simplicity to deliver strong powerful messages. Hemingway won a Nobel Prize for this particular work, which was well deserved. In my opinion this story is similar to that of Moby-Dick only this story symbolizes much more. Many people disagree about what the story actually represents. Doesn't represent man versus nature or a man's role within nature? There are several examples of symbolism throughout the story. The main character, Santiago, shows that even if you are unlucky at first if you persevere that great things can happen. Santiago and the great marlin he catch display qualities of pride, honor, and the same eternal law: They must kill or be killed (Sparknotes). If one was to learn something from this book it would be that, as the main character showed, Through the battle of the inevitable a man can truly prove himself (Sparknotes). "Santiago's struggle does not enable him to change man's place in the world, but rather to meet his dignified destiny
