Ernest Hemmingway

Ernest Hemmingway was a father, author, and even a soldier. Ernest was born on July 21,

1899 in Cicero (Now Oak Park, Illinois). His father was Clarence Hemmingway, and his mother was Grace Hemmingway. Growing up in a suburb in Illinois there wasn’t much to do but the trio did spend a good amount of time in Northern Michigan where they had a cabin. Here Ernest loved fishing, hunted, and playing outside, rain or shine. He learned to appreciate the outdoors in this forested environment where he could play outside whenever he wanted. Ernest was always good in school, in high school he wrote for his school newspaper, Trapeze and Tabula. Mostly he wrote about sports, upcoming games, and maybe even tryouts. When he finished with this service he was awarded the Italian Silver Medal of Bravery for his great work. He did though gain severe injuries that landed him a spot in a Milanian Hospital. Later he met a nurse that worked there called Agnes von Kurowsky, she accepted his proposal but left him before they got married. This caused Ernest to fall into a devastated and forlorn state of mind. This started the creation of his story, A Very Short Story, also probably his most famous work, A Farewell to Arms. After that he moved to Northern Michigan and then joined a company called the Toronto Star. When he visited Chicago he met Hadley Richardson, who would soon become his first wife. They got engaged and married very quickly and moved to Paris. He still kept his job at the Toronto Star but instead worked as a foreign correspondent. In Paris he there met a couple of authors including his mentor, Gertrude Stein. He became a big part of what Gertrude called “The Lost Generation.” Then Hadley and Ernest
