As a result of studying the New Testament in Professor Bautch’s class, I have truly learned in depth about the most significant aspects of Catholicism and terminology that I did not know before. Examples of terminology I learned includes Christology, eschatology, and Gnosticism, to name a few. Christology is how people think about or speak about Jesus. Eschatology refers to gospel of John and is used as a way to speak about the end of time. Gnosticism was a heretical movement which taught that earth was created by a lesser divinity and Christ was a messenger of the divine being. As a reader, learning these new terms has made me a more intelligent Catholic student and given me the tools to be able to understand cultural literacy. I cherish the fact that the New Testament is the means to eternal life and explains the grace of Christ and salvation. In John 6:68, it says that Jesus Christ has, “the words of eternal life”. Additionally, the New Testament includes words that provided me with a sense of knowledge, appreciation, and happiness. In John 1:4, it reads, “And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full”.
Overall, this class was fantastic because it opened up my eyes as too the amount of rich history and analysis that must be taken to understand the significance of the times of Jesus’s birth and how past events are interpreted today.
Another important theme I learned about how women were treated during the first century. The role of women is talked about mostly in Corinthians and gives the reader a hint of the type of culture that existed back then. 1 Corinthians says, “But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is head of
