Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Fresno was a landmark case in American law and in the development of the common law of product liability in the United States. The plaintiff Gladys Escola, a former waitress, was injured caused by an exploding Coca-Cola bottle. The result was a deep five-inch cut, which severed the blood vessels, nerves, and muscles of the thumb and palm of the hand.
