Could you imagine living in a world of where most of your family ignored you, people discriminated you by the way you look, and questioned what your gender was? No one ever understood Esperanza Cordero and what she experienced this in The House on Mango Street after all the negativity growing up she has matured into a young women. For this reason, The House on Mango Street is more of a coming of age story then The Catcher in the Rye because, at this point Holden hasn’t matured at all. Esperanza was racially discriminated as a child. Also, Holden hasn’t grown up or has seem to wanna grow up. Beyond any doubt Esperanza has her family, however the general population that truly helped pushed her and kept Esperanza on her feet were her uncle Nacho, and her mom, and a tad bit of her kin. Esperanza had less assets and her exclusive asset was her companion Sally, that regularly pushed Esperanza away and deceived her when she required her the most, driving Esperanza to experience childhood with her own. In the part "Red Clowns" Esperanza is being attacked and keeping in mind that that is occurring she says "Sally, you lied. It wasn't what you said by any means. What he did. Where he touched me. I didn't need it, Sally. The way they said it, The way it should be, every one of the storybooks and the films, Why did you deceive me?" This is shown to Esperanza that Sally was gradually pushing far from her and was losing the one youth companion that she had just the same as.
