Every adversity or change is a positive vicissitude in life, As said by Chip Curley, “Resilience can refer to positive adjustment in the face of adversity. Resilience has also been defined as the individuals cope successfully with significant change, adversity or risk”. All of us are guilty of a crime against change in our life. When we are at our lowest point we don’t think of how our downs are a pathway to our highs. As said by Chip Curley we think that change is bad and forget about why change is happening and how it can be positive for us. She learned independence by learning to teach herself to work, caring for her sick mother, and being courageous and standing up for other people. Esperanza has faced adversity and adversity has changed her character and personality with Independence, Empathetic/Caring, and Brave/Courageousness.

When people go through adversity they start becoming more independent as they learn throughout the journey of adversity they learn that they can’t continue to be dependent on other people. This will now result in people who went through adversity that you can’t be dependent on other people to depend on your problem. Henceforth, In Esperanza Rising, we see throughout the story where Esperanza becomes more independent. Esperanza's mother had valley fever, a disease where dust enters your lungs. When her mother was admitted to the hospital, Esperanza told her mother, “Don’t worry, Mama. Remember, I will take care of everything. I am working and I can pay the bills. I love you”, (Muñoz Ryan, 184). Esperanza wanted to feel responsible for her mother. They can stand up for what is right because they know what they are going through. Being the person that people can run to is another way of standing up for them. As a matter of fact. Esperanza comforts Isabel when she does not win the Queen of May. “Isabel, it doesn't matter who won. Yes, you would have made a beauty queen but it would not last” (Munoz Ryan, 227). Esperanza was brave enough to tell Isabel that being the queen of may did not matter and it would not last long. Additionally, Esperanza's mother was admitted to the hospital and Esperanza was devastated to hear the news that her mother was helpless and sick in a hospital. Esperanza is feeling so much pain in the back, in her mind, she might think her mother might die. “Don’t worry, I will take care of everything. I am working and I can pay the bills” (Munoz Ryan, 184). Esperanza still helped her mother even though Esperanza was going through a lot and also trying to care for the home. For this reason, there is a point in the story where Miguel's job was taken by the people in Oklahoma and Esperanza was not keen about how Migel’s job was
